"Let your soul be moved to the very core as the four exquisite voices of Kaya give you aural pleasure!! Their inventive, quirky, soulful, magical sound is truly original in the world of acapella; captivating audiences with sensual storytelling and heartfelt harmonies...."
KAYA

Kaya, four amazing female singers with the on-stage charisma usually likened to hip-hop MC’s, performed a very moving set, with each member taking turns in leading the group through originals of differing styles and unique interpretations of classic covers such as Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Soldier” and The John Butler Trio’s “Zebra”. What makes Kaya so entertaining to watch is their familiarity with both their music and each other which combines for an almost cabaret style performance.

KAYA BIOGRAPHY

KAYA's unique music draws on such influences as jazz, soul, blues, pop, folk and contemporary sound-scape with all band members coming from music/performing arts courses at UWS. Together, they create urban music that is both lyrically and melodically compelling - if not a little cheeky and sensuous as well. In concert, KAYA performs a capella in 4-part harmony and also with instruments.

Chris Irvine (Phonies/Deependers) is a regular feature with them at live shows, he is a multi-instrumentalist Beat Boxer and Drummer and loves to drop FAT beats over their luscious vocals. Their dynamic live performances are mainly of original songs including 'Don't want to go home', 'Somebody's Lyin' and 'Move me', 'Too Much Talk' and 'Mr Man' but also add innovative versions of songs they have arranged such as 'Zebra' by John Butler Trio, 'Big Yellow Taxi' by  Joni Mitchell and a few Bob Marley favourites as well as some mad funky jamming!

Emma, Juleiaah, Alexi and  Sally started singing together as Kaya at the end of 2004 and haven't stopped since then. Originally they got together to arrange Lyin' for a Uni project of Emma's and to support each other in their songwriting and singing ambitions but soon realised that singing together created a sound and a feeling that they had not encountered before. It is an enriching and healing experience for them and they love to pass on this feeling to their audiences.

In the last 2 years Kaya have performed nearly 200 shows around Australia. They have also recently supported Renee Geyer, Chris Wilson and John Schumann in Melbourne and Jimmy Cliff at State Theatre NSW and Serena Ryder (Canada) in Brisbane and Melbourne.

Regulars at The Vanguard (Newtown), The Basement (Sydney), The Brass Monkey (Cronulla), Heritage Hotel (Bulli) and The Clarendon (Katoomba), Will and Toby's (Sydney) as well as festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival, Thredbo Blues Festival, Surry Hills Festival, Marrickville Festival, Dayelsford Chill Out Festival, Strathfield Spring Fair, Great Southern Rockabilly Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Gympie Muster, Yepoon Village Festival and much more!

The Kaya ladies are always very keen to lend their voices to charities and have performed at The Hilton for Canteen, Gearins Hotel for Oxfam and The Westin for Diabetes Buzz Ball, for Hearts in Union in Orange, International Womens Day and most recently for Breast Cancer fundraiser at Rodeo Show, Paddington.

Kaya are also perfect features at corporate events or any other celebrations and have been asked to share their talents for the Wine Society of Australia in Sydney and Johnson and Johnson in Port Douglas to name but a few.

Kaya recorded their first single "Somebody's Lyin'" (Featuring Jeremedy from Melodics) with producer Steve Scanlon for release mid 2007. The single was launched  at The Vanuguard in Sydney and The Northcote Social Club in June.

Bonus features include an a cappella recording of John Butler’s hit, “Zebra” (David Davis), and two hot urban remixes of the single, by Tokoloshe and The Deependers. Pick up a copy for yourself at a live show to hear the latest in a cappella/soul/world music, delivered with a funky twist, as only Kaya can.
